Felix Kiessling

Felix Kiessling (b. 1980, Hamburg)’s practice is characterised by extensive fieldwork and research into environmental forces, and many of his works experiment with ideas of space, emptiness, weight and gravitation. Kiessling describes his artistic material as at the interface between things that we see, that which we individually construct, and fact.

Over the past five years Kiessling has worked at artist Olafur Eliasson’s Institute for Raumpexperimente (Institute for Spatial Experiments). Kiessling is also part of a Berlin-based artists’ collective, Das Numen, comprised of Julian Charrière, Andreas Greiner, Markus Hoffmann, and Felix Kiessling. Das Numen work together to investigate experimental ways to study space and biological systems and the feelings associated with them. Blending art and science, they translate their exploration of natural phenomena in the urban context into aesthetic environments that sensitise the viewers to the world around them.

In Kiessling’s project Der Sprung (How the Earth shakes when I jump), 2014, Kiessling measured his bodily impact on the earth through a seismographic machine. Through Kiessling’s action event and subsequent calculation, the artist established that when he jumps, the Earth slows down by 1.674032409267443 x 1022 meters per second.

In Kiessling’s project Vavilov, 2015, the artist explored the effects of gravitational force underwater, as well as how to approximate the sensation of touching the sea floor. Equipped with a weight, a rope and a boat, Kiessling travelled to the centre of the Tyrrhenian Sea to touch the volcano Vavilov, 800m below the water’s surface. There, the artist let down a weight, in order to have the sensation of the moment it would touch the ground. Kiessling sought to experience the sensory effect of those 800 meters, until finally the force on the weight drastically dropped as the weight landed, and gravitation had stopped to pull.
